Lucky You – the movie

Read: a bit of spoiler here.

Being a poker enthusiast, I didn’t pass up on seeing the movie, Lucky You, starring Aussie Eric Bana, Drew Barrymore and Robert Duvall.

Huck Cheever (Bana) is an exceptionally skilled pro poker player but his emotions at the tableluckyyou_l200608171433.jpg undermines his skills when he is heads-up with his father L.C. Cheever (Duvall) who is a poker legend and has won the World Series of Poker two times. Billie Offer (Barrymore) is a young singer and aVegas newbie who has more heart than talent. Huck and Billie appears to have a knack for reading people, only they use it differently. Huck uses his gift on his opponents in poker and to avoid emotional commitments in his personla life while Billie’s intuitions make her see the emotional truth of the people around her and sympathise with them.

The story was really just about Huck trying to get the $10,000 entry fee for the WSOP tournament, thrown in with a bit of romance and conflicts with family. It was a bit long for a very simpe plot. Nevertheless, I have enjoyed watching it. I liked how the makers of this movie did not embellish the poker game with very good hands. It seemed more real when Huck won with a pair of deuces against an ace high and when he won with pocket 10’s against pocket 8’s but was then called a misdeal because the dealer who was stammering did not burn a card before the flop. The river was an 8 so Huck’s pocket 10’s lost to trip 8’s. The presence of a lot of real life professional poker players helped a bit too, methinks.

As the movie is centered around poker, it can a bit boring especially to those who are not interested and do not understand the game and its language.

Robert Duvall’s performance is worth mentioning. I’ll give him the bullets (pocket Aces in poker).

Harry Hotter or Hunky Potter?

Daniel Radcliffe is Harry Potter no more. He has grown up and what a young man he is now. He has transformed himself from a cute little wiz we all love into a hotty hunk we can all drool. I’m sure his legions of fans will grow up too and embrace this new change.

He has changed from this….
to this…

Night at the Museum – the movie

January 10, 2007 at 5:46 am | Posted in All, Films/Theatre | 4 Comments

We went to see the movie Night at the Museum with no great expectations at all. I know this movie is for kids. But as it turned out, we enjoyed it. The movie was funny. My favorite line in the movie is when Ben Stiller was asked about his “snapper” invention. He said, “Yeah, I’m just waiting for the technology to catch up with the idea.” I thought it’s clever.

Night at the Museum is an adaptation from a children’s book of the same title by Milan Trenc.
